Atlanta, Georgia – July 1st, 2021 – Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (IATA: ATL) one of the busiest in the world, is becoming Green. This effort started in 2011, when this airport accepted the invitation to serve as Elemental Impact (Ei) Sustainable Food Court Initiative (SFCI) Airport Pilot. The mission is to bring zero waste initiatives to food courts and develop industry sustainable best practices for back of the house and front of the house operations.
Concessionaires have played a very important role in supporting this goal and making a sustainable transition to compostable products aligned with this new environmental protection vision. According to Derik Mortenson, Director of Concepts and Standards for Concession International, “Although there may be a slight difference in the cost of compostable disposables compared to conventional plastic disposables, many concessionaires have committed to the important goal to achieve sustainability in Atlanta.” Derik also mentions that, “The role that paper goods suppliers has been fundamental in making an effective transition to compostable products.”
Since then, US Supply House has served concessionaires in achieving this goal. US Supply House has been partnering with Concessions International and others to provide compostable disposables made from wheat, bamboo, paper, PLA and other plant-based materials. At the end of its life cycle these materials will be incorporated to nature as a fertilizer.
The outcomes of this partnership are very tangible and making a difference. US Supply House is diverting more than 306,000 plastics cups, 300,000 plastic straws, 9250 to go containers, 250,000 pieces of plastic cutlery and 200,000 plastic bags every two months from the landfill.
Along with the plastic ban ordinance, the SFCI is creating a truly sustainable waste management system for Atlanta. Furthermore, Atlanta is the first airport of its kind to construct an exclusive composting facility on site, to ensure that the waste is adequately managed, and in turn contributing to the creation of a circular economy.
Atlanta Airport is showcasing to the world that sustainability can be accomplished only by taking small but bold steps. Partnering with like-minded enterprises has also been a crucial step, and US Supply House is proud to be part of team to achieve sustainability in Atlanta.
